Eric LeGrand Will Speak at Commencement

May 6, 2014

Members of the Rutgers University–New Brunswick/RBHS Community:

I am pleased to say that, in addition to Governor Tom Kean’s commencement address, Eric LeGrand will speak at our May 18 Commencement and personally receive his degree from me as a representative of the Class of 2014.

Eric, a defensive standout for the Scarlet Knights football team who suffered a severe spinal injury during a game in October 2010, has become a source of hope and inspiration to people around the world throughout his ongoing rehabilitation from his injury. His memorable return to the field in his motorized wheelchair a year later was chosen by Sports Illustrated as “Best Moment of 2011.” Eric took his football knowledge into the booth as an analyst for the Rutgers Radio Network and shared his story with the world through the publication of his book, BELIEVE: My Faith and the Tackle That Changed My Life.

Eric LeGrand has received numerous honors, including the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPY Awards. His former Rutgers head coach, Greg Schiano, also paid tribute to Eric’s indomitable spirit by symbolically signing him to a contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on May 2, 2012.

Eric holds a special place in the hearts of the Class of 2014 and of everyone at Rutgers. We are thrilled that he will be joining us on stage, and I know his remarks will make this special occasion even more memorable.

Sincerely,

Bob Barchi
